The ‘But Why Are They White’ photographic series is inspired by a recent research visit to a South Georgian Plantation site. Upon questioning current restoration processes of historic slave dwellings, Goddard found that privileged opinion regarding preservation methods of the site lead to a furthering of the “white only” narrative of place. Answers to questions surrounding the intention behind the white color of plantation homes and its’ surrounding outbuildings, purposely rejected the systematic use of the color white as a form of psychological oppression to enslaved peoples.
